Trying to test drive a WRX has been like pulling teeth. First of all, the Subaru dealer in Tennessee doesn’t care to stock enough apparently. They sold one 2 weeks ago and I’ve been trying to test drive one for as long. I went and test drove a used STI last week but it’s not exactly what I want so I asked them to let me know when a new one came in. Hadn’t heard back.

Kinja'd!!!

Then we were in Colorado this weekend and figured it would be no problem to go test drive one of the 10 the Colorado Spring dealer had on the lot. We get there and the salesmen didn’t even give me the time of day and said they don’t want miles on the WRX because it’s a performance car and customers like them with little to no miles. Please... that’s a $28,000 car, not a freaking Porsche Turbo S. I called the sales manager an hour later and he echoed what his sales guy said. Idiots the pair. I then called Subaru NA and voiced my displeasure to them. That man was very nice.

We get home today and since the wife starts her nursing job tomorrow(and the schedule is about to get crazy)I called the local Subaru dealer again to see if they had a new WRX in I could test drive. The person I spoke to said they had an ‘18 Premium in. Not as loaded as I’m looking for but fine nonetheless. They said to stop in and they’ll get us on a test drive. Great! Some progress! We drive to the Subaru dealer, walk in and say we want to test drive the WRX they told me they had. The man at the front counter then tells me that they don’t have any in stock and the next delivery is 8/25/17... are you kidding me... so you told me one thing on the phone and another in person?

Im not purchasing for a few months but I’m this close to deciding to get a FoST out of principle of not having crappy dealers. Rant over.

Focus ST I want more now for your time.

Find out who the zone rep is in your area and bypass the dealers. That person should be able to set you up.

Sounds like a couple of awful dealers to me. When my dad was looking at a new car for my Mom the dealer encouraged him to bring cars back home for my mom to test drive. We live over 30 miles from that particular dealership so bringing a car home and having my mom test drive it would out about 80 mi on the car. I would try another dealer. The smaller dealerships tend to have better service than the big dealer groups in my experience.

That’s ridiculous. I don’t really blame you for getting ready to just but the FoST. But I’d really wonder if the WRX would be better. I’d more dealers, or maybe there’s a used one on another dealer lot that you can test drive at least? ?

Call the service manager - they generally know who to call. Zone reps generally handle approval of certain repairs and similar, but they generally have a good relationship with the sales manager. And believe me - they want you to bring the car to that service department. I know this from having dated a Mercedes asst. service manager back in the 90s.

The Subaru dealership 10 minutes from my house is part of a massive chain of dealers across the state sucks. Dealt with them once and never went back. The small dealership 30+ minutes away has been amazing. My dad has now bought 3 cars from them (they are the only dealer my dad has bought multiple cars from) and they do all the service on both my parents cars. The manager has mentioned to us how they are proud to help people who got bad service at the major dealership with great service at their smaller dealer.

Worth noting that I am in New England so the small dealer is about 250 cars in inventory while the large dealer is 800+.

The regional representative has a lot of leverage over the dealers because the reps can control what cars the dealers get in inventory. They can often set you up with an order and strongarm the dealer into agreeing to the terms.

I’m not endorsing it at all, but if the Colorado dealers knew you were from Tennessee I’m not surprised they didn’t let you test drive the car there. Since you live so far away they knew that even if you did decide to get the WRX they weren’t going to be the ones to get the sale.

That’s a start at least, but yeah, I’d want to drive the Limited.

I’ve bought several cars that were very different than what I test drove that worked out okay (in both cases, I test drove an auto and ordered a stick), but you’re taking a chance with a lot of $ doing that.

But I think that FoST would keep looking better and better. ..

As a 25-year-old who still gets carded at R-rated movies, I feel your pain.

The Pittsburgh-area dealerships initially told me to fuck off, but after persisting, they said I could only take it for a test drive if I agreed to a credit check, negotiated a purchase price, and put a deposit down first. It didn’t matter if I called ahead or not, they wanted the money first before they’d let me anywhere near the keys. The only reason I didn’t go with a Focus ST is because I intended on tracking/autocrossing it and didn’t want FWD.

Solution: ask your 56-year-old dad to show up in his V10 Audi S8 and pretend he is buying a WRX for himself.

Result: they STILL required him to negotiate a purchase price first, but ultimately let me test drive it without a credit check or deposit.

If we hadn’t bullied them down to $28.5K for a brand new WRX Limited, we would have given up altogether.

Knowing nothing about TN it appears that according to google Nashville Subaru is an awful dealership (1.5 stars on Yelp). Based on your comment and some googling it sounds like you went to Darrel Waltrip Subaru as that appears to be the Hendrick location in your area. Those 2 dealers are numbers 8 and 9 in TN according to dealer rater (10 dealers listed there). I don’t know where anything is in relation to you but the dealer rater list is here: http://www.dealerrater.com/directory/Tennessee/Subaru/

Any of those within a reasonable distance to you?

They’re a smaller dealership amd currently have nineteen WRXs in stock according to their website. This is a problem with sought after cars. They don’t want 300+ miles in test drives adding up. Because, then people will say it’s a demo model, no longer new, and want $3000 off, or go find them a different car that has under 25 miles.

At the same time, there is no way I would buy a car without a decent test drive first. Longer than their 4 miles loop around the block.

Of course we have to factor in the miles the dealership sales supervisor or whatever puts on the car themselves when they drive to lunch or if they have to pick up someone. See the thing is should they be driving those specialty models? no, but who is going to call them out on it? they slap a dealer plate on the back get in the car and go.

I’ve had a similar experience when looking at WRXes. I did test drive a bugeye one when they first came out. The place we bought my wife’s Impreza will send a non-STI out on a test drive if they have one in stock but an STI they want a firm commitment. It’s silly because it’s a mainstream-price car but they never make very many of them so most dealers that are pimping mass quantities of Outbacks, Foresters etc. get a tiny fraction of that number of WRXes.

Subaru dealers man... I just commented on someone’s post a few weeks ago about how I scheduled a TD of the STi hatch when it was first released in 07. I previously purchased a brand new WRX, and then a very slightly used STi from that dealer...Got the same horseshit line you did “people that buy STi’s don’t like a lot of miles on their car blah blah blah”. They wanted me to agree to a deal before the drive! I went with a friend who had also purchased two brand new cars from this dealer. I bought an E46 M3 and he bought a brand new STi from another dealer.

Even when we bought my wife’s Forester a few months ago it was a pain in the dick (different dealer). They were horribly unorganized.

After watching a STi owner finally get a lemon law invoked replacement upgrade to another brand new STi that promptly broke and seeing that the service advisors are far worse than what you’ve seen manning the sales floor, I think you should listen to the universe. Buy anything else.

Imagine your level of frustration except you’re making payments on something that is constantly in the shop where the techs can’t find the obvious problems (and leave your car downwind from the paint shop with your windows rolled down). That is what the ownership is like from what I observed first hand. Nothing but horror stories. Consider yourself lucky.

Yeah, I hate to be the one to say it, but I heavily dislike the experience I had at Jim Burke/Subaru of Birmingham. We stood in the waiting area for 15-20 minutes and no one came to help us, and when we eventually did find someone, he didn’t sound that enthused about helping at all. This was for an XV Crosstrek, mind you, not a WRX.

I recommend Subaru of Montgomery. I make the trip down just to get things like recalls done and I don’t mind it at all because they’re very helpful. It’s a long drive, but the customer service alone is worth it. Koby Subaru in Montgomery is even farther, but they’re the ones who put me into the Outback in the first place, also very good.

I don’t get either one. A Porsche dealer let me drive a brand new 911 because the used one that I came to see was being worked on. Nissan let me take a car home overnight...

Subaru has been un responsive or unhelpful almost any time I have interacted with them. I might have bought a 2016 STi over my S3 but when I called to talk to someone about ordering one, my call was not returned. I burnt up a turbo on my 2005 wrx 60 miles out of warranty, car was un modified. They wouldn’t help me at all....

At the mainline store I started in the business, if you were not an immediate customer, management would make sure you would never darken the door again. On the upside, she seems like she would be ok with either car, so you win either way.

Well she hasn’t ridden in the WRX yet but she really liked how smooth Anne comfy the ST was. She doesn’t have a good preconceived notion of the WRX though because I love making fun of SuBROrus and their capes and flat brim hats. She doesn’t like those. I am an accountant and those don’t fit my personality. Weird thing.

It would be oddly affirming to see an accountant drive one of those.

One of my coworkers has a rally blue 2011 WRX so believe it. Our day jobs GT belong so we often have some fun toys. I also happen to be 22 and haven’t gotten the fast bug out yet.

Young life, young love, you need to still hoon it. It’s not quite the same in your 30's. Good luck with the buy! Hope the next dealer treats you better.

The website said there’s a WRX Premium in transit so hopefully they call me soon to run down there.

The amount of comments defending the dealership model on posts like this astounds me.

Yeah I test drove a 130k Tesla a month and it was nothing. If dealerships weren’t such dicks I’d be fine with them.
